Cal State East Bay Honors Superintendent Bowers

Dr. Kelly BowersDr. Kelly Bowers, Superintendent of Schools for the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) was named the 2016 Distinguished Alumna by California State University East Bay’s College of Education and Allied Studies. Superintendent Bowers is a product of Bay Area public schools, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from UC Berkeley in 1987, earning her Teaching Credential (1991), Administrative Credential (2001) and Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership (2002) at Cal State University East Bay. Superintendent Bowers went on to earn her Doctorate in Education from UC Berkeley (2016), as part of the Leadership for Educational Equity Program (LEEP). The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the university.

Dr. Bowers has over 30 years of experience as an educator, including 7 years as superintendent. Under her leadership, the LVJUSD has earned distinction for educational excellence, while also being selected as a Bay Area Top Workplace in 2012, 2013, and 2016. Dr. Bowers has been honored by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) as the 2012 ACSA Region VI Superintendent of the Year, representing all of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The Distinguished Alumni award recognized Dr. Bowers for her outstanding commitment as an educator and for her success in providing exemplary educational opportunities for all students in the Livermore District.

LVJUSD Board President Craig Bueno applauded Bowers’ leadership. “Our Board is passionate about the education of our Livermore students and the sheer potential that a great education will offer each of them. In her achievement, Dr. Bowers personifies our primary mission: ‘Each student will graduate with the skills needed to contribute and thrive in a changing world,’” said Bueno. Dr. Bowers is a “hands-on” superintendent who is actively involved with students, teachers, and her staff of over 1200 employees. “She’s enthusiastic. She’s one of the biggest cheerleaders we have,” said Board Trustee, Anne White.

As she received her award, Dr. Bowers said to the CSUEB faculty and members of the CSUEB Pioneer family, “Together you all have taught and inspired me to believe in myself and believe in others. Especially, I believe in the possibilities of education to change lives and, ultimately, change our world. I embrace this mission as my life’s work and I promise to be the pioneer who continues to make a difference for our children.”

Since 1985, Cal State East Bay has honored top alumni from each of its four colleges who have made significant contributions as professionals in their fields, who practice ethical leadership, and whose overall work demonstrates commitment to the values of the university. Dr. Bowers was honored on October 21, 2016 along with Atul Dhablania, vice president of Hardware Engineering and Worldwide Operations for Dell SonicWALL (College of Business and Economics); Gaylord “Glenn” Henry, founder and current president of Centaur Technologies (College of Science); and Nancy O’Malley, district attorney of Alameda County (College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences).
