Background
We are proud of the academic growth our schools have achieved in the past few years. However, because more growth is needed: Junction K-8 School is classified as a “program improvement school.” Therefore, parents can request Supplemental Educational Services.
What are Supplemental Educational Services?
Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program is part of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001. Through the SES program, low-income parents can get free tutoring services for their children. These tutors provide extra help in reading, language arts, and mathematics, to students who may be struggling in school. All tutors serve English learners and Special Education students. This additional help will be provided before school, after school or on weekends.
Why are Supplemental Educational Services important to families?
The SES program gives low-income families new options for improving their children’s education.
- Improving student achievement and work habits. By building on learning taking place during the school day, tutoring can help children improve their academic achievement.
- Meeting specific student needs. Some students may not learn well in traditional classrooms. Tutoring can offer students individual attention to help them learn in different and perhaps more effective ways.
Is there a cost to parents?
There is no cost to parents. The district will pay approximately $695.31 per student for supplemental educational services. The maximum hours of service this will buy from a provider are listed for comparison purposes.
Are Supplemental Educational Services available to any LVJUSD student?
No, Supplemental Educational Services are available only to students at: Junction K-8 School, who have qualified for free or reduced lunch. If the number of eligible students who apply for the SES program exceeds the financial resources available, the lowest achieving students from low-income families will receive SES first.
How do parents get more information about Supplemental Educational Services?
Read the attached packet of information describing the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s Supplemental Educational Services plan. The packet contains descriptions of approved programs in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s area. Parents may choose the program they think is best for their child. The Parent Request for Supplemental Educational Services form in the packet must be returned to the Curriculum and Special Projects office by Friday, November 16, 2012, if you want your child to receive supplemental educational services.
Do I have to participate in Supplemental Educational Services?
No, Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District is required to provide you with this opportunity. If you choose not to participate, do not complete the Parent Request for Supplemental Educational Services form.
Is transportation provided to and from the supplemental educational services provider’s location?
No, transportation is the responsibility of the parents.
The District will:
- Notify parents about the availability of services, at least annually [Section 1116(e) (2) (A)].
- Help parents choose a provider, if requested [Section 1116(e) (2) (B)].
- Determine which students should receive services if not all students can be served [Section 1116(e) (2) (C)].
- Enter into an agreement with a provider selected by parents of an eligible student [Section 1116(e) (3)].
- Protect the privacy of students who receive SES [Section 1116(e) (2) (D)].
Who do I call if I have questions?
You may call Amy Robbins, Director of Curriculum and Special Projects, at (925) 606-3202 if you have any questions about Supplemental Educational Services.

School Choice
When are children eligible for school choice?
How do parents know if their child is eligible for school choice?
If a child attends a Title I school that has been identified by the State for school improvement, parents can choose to send the child to another public school that is not so identified. Each school year, the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District notifies families to inform them of their child's eligibility to transfer to another school and provides parents with more than one transfer option, if more than one exists. For the 2012/13 school year, students have the option to transfer to East Avenue Middle School, Christensen Middle School, Arroyo Seco Elementary School, or Jackson Avenue Elementary School, as space allows. The District pays for transportation costs, giving priority to low-income, low-achieving students if there are not enough funds available to pay for all students.
