District News & Announcements

2/23/18

Dear Livermore Families and Community,

We are deeply saddened by the tragic events of last week’s school shooting in Florida.  We understand that this event heightens concern about the safety and security measures we have in place in our own district. I assure you that the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff continues to be the utmost priority of our Board and our district, and so I want to share some of the measures we take to ensure safety.

Throughout our district, we have established procedures that maintain a safe environment and provide protection during emergency situations. Each school site has a Board-approved Comprehensive Safe School Plan and an Emergency Operations Plan that are each updated annually, with input from staff and parents/guardians. Principals review the implementation of this plan with staff on a regular basis. In addition, specialized training has been provided for all staff members in our district in critical incident and emergency preparedness response. Drills are scheduled frequently and practiced so that students and staff are prepared to respond to fire, earthquake, and lockdown situations (shelter in place and active shooter). When a 911 call is placed from any phone in our district, administrators, including our district leaders, are notified immediately on our own phones, so that we can provide assistance. In the rare instance that we have had to respond to a true crisis situation, we have responded appropriately and have had successful and safe outcomes. We make use of a mass notification system that facilitates communication with families and staff during emergency and crisis situations.

We continue to work in conjunction with our parent/guardian groups and with the Livermore Police Department to communicate our safety plans and seek ongoing input so that we are responsive to changing needs. We have highly trained School Resource Officers, members of the Livermore Police Department, on our high school campuses; all schools have access to Livermore Police Department officers at any time. I meet regularly with the Mayor and the Chief of Police to collaborate on maintaining safe schools using current, research-based methods. We have undergone a Security and School Site Assessment, and have implemented recommended measures to increase safety protocols. Our schools are secured with fencing and gates that keep our campuses closed to visitors. Our campuses have designated point(s) of entry. We have security cameras that provide video surveillance in designated areas, with bond funds allocated to expand capabilities.

We provide mental health and wellness support through school counseling, as well as through partnerships with community resources such as the Hume Center, Horizons Family Counseling, and Axis Community Health Care. We provide additional curriculum and support through programs such as Choose Love, assemblies such as Teen Esteem at the secondary level, and Kid Connection at the elementary level. We follow recommendations by the National Association of School Psychologists whenever students may experience distress, and we work with local agencies to provide intervention and support. We continue to educate students to be aware of their surroundings, and to speak to an adult on campus about any concerns they may have. Please help us share the message: “If you see something, or know something, say something.

It weighs heavy on my heart that our children may, even for a moment, question their safety in our world. We continue to do all we can to ensure that our schools are a haven, so that students can come eager to learn and go home each day energized and ready to contribute to their families and community. I continue to be grateful for the support of the Livermore Police Department, our City leaders, our Board of Trustees, our staff, and our families. I welcome your comments so that we can continue to do our best to serve our children.

Sincerely,

Kelly Bowers, Ed.D.
