Dear Livermore Community,

School is underway! On my visits to classrooms around our district, I am continually impressed by the high level of student engagement, the dedication and expertise of our teachers, and the ongoing commitment of all staff members to raise this next generation of global citizens.

This month, we celebrate our students who excel academically. We congratulate our National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students at Granada and Livermore High - these seniors rank in the top 1 - 3% of all seniors in the United States. We are proud of our 350 students who are officially biliterate - those whose English Learner status was reclassified to English Fluent. We commend the hundreds of students who met and surpassed their Summer Reading Program goals, and the thousands who scored at the highest levels on CAASPP. And we applaud the innovative students at Christensen Middle School whose empathy for others inspired them to create the wheel chariot and augmentative alternative communication device that allow all students to participate in physical education; their efforts earned them the 2017 Innovation Tri-Valley Dreammakers and Risktakers Award.

Our students' successes are a tribute to their creativity and their intellectual perseverance. It is also a tribute to their teachers' ongoing learning and commitment to excellence. I am excited that our entire faculty, district-wide, has the opportunity this month to participate in a full day of professional development. Our teachers - our experts - are empowering one another to be better.

Learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms. Learning opportunities can be found all around us. Our mission is to graduate students who will contribute to society. Kudos to the Granada High School students who adopted North Forest High School in Houston, Texas, and to the students at Arroyo Seco, Croce, and Rancho Elementary Schools who reached out to show compassion for elementary school students in Houston.

Our students are contributing and our schools are thriving!

Warm Regards,

Kelly Bowers, Ed.D.
